WHO WE ARE
Our Mission
NJ Benefits exists for one reason: to make it easier for New Jersey residents to find real, local help — food, cash assistance, and housing support — without the runaround.
What we're here to do
When you're struggling to feed your family or keep the lights on, you shouldn't need a law degree to figure out where to go. But too often, that's what it feels like — scattered websites, outdated PDFs, phone trees that go nowhere.
NJ Benefits is a nonprofit that pulls local resources into one place and keeps them current. We focus on the basics people ask about most: food pantries, cash assistance programs, and housing support. Each listing is checked by volunteers who live in the communities they cover.
We're not trying to replace caseworkers, food banks, or the good work already happening across the state. We're trying to make sure more people actually reach that help — the first time, with the right information.
Why this work matters here
New Jersey is one of the most expensive states in the country. A family can be working full time and still one emergency away from not making rent. The programs that exist are often strong — but spread across counties, agencies, and nonprofits that don't always talk to each other.
Camden and Paterson are where we started, but the need doesn't stop at city limits. We're building something that scales with the state — neighborhood by neighborhood — because a pantry in Passaic County and a shelter in Atlantic City both deserve the same care in how they're listed.
This is personal for us. We've seen what happens when someone gives up after the third wrong address. We built NJ Benefits so fewer people have that experience.
“Everyone in New Jersey deserves a clear path to help — not a scavenger hunt.”
What we stand for
These aren't words on a wall. They're how we decide what goes on the site, how we treat the people who use it, and how we work with partners across the state.
Trust over volume
We would rather list ten resources we know are accurate than a hundred we haven't checked. Every listing gets a last-verified date — because "probably still open" isn't good enough.
Dignity first
Needing help is hard enough without feeling judged. We write plainly, skip the jargon, and never make people jump through hoops just to find a phone number.
Neighbors, not algorithms
Real people in New Jersey verify what we publish. They know the neighborhoods, the bus routes, and which pantry runs out by noon on Thursdays.
Transparency always
We're a nonprofit with no ads and no paywalls. If something on our site is wrong, we want to know — and we'll fix it fast.
Help is closer than you think
Whether you need support today, want to volunteer an hour a month, or represent an organization we should know about — there's a place for you here.
